Our mission at the FSSNS is to develop and deliver cost effective, quality training programs. These programs will ensure a safe work environment and a skilled work force for the Forestry Industry of Nova Scotia, in compliance with Industry and Government regulations.

We are a non-profit organization, funded by a levy, not to exceed 3 percent, on Workers Compensation Assessments. Members of the Society consist of the ABOVE Workers Compensation Board Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC).
Benefits Provided by the FSSNS:
Employers are made aware of their responsibility under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, (OHSA) resulting in a safer work environment and a significant reduction in workplace accidents.
Benefits and opportunities to those involved will increase over time with a realization of corporate liability and lower Workers' Compensation premiums.  Standards for forest industry sectors will result in a more efficient, more skilled work force.
Employers will be better positioned to seek certification under the emerging marketplace standards (CSA/ISO,FSC).
A monitoring system will be established to ensure workplace compliance with the OHSA and Department of Labour requirements.
A tracking program will be developed to ensure accurate documentation of employer and employee participation.
An on-going industry assessment will be in place to determine the success of the Forestry Safety Society's programs.
The programs are industry owned, operated and funded; therefore program content and costs are controlled by industry.
Goals of the FSSNS:
      • Save lives and reduce injuries.
      • Reduce all costs associated with work place accidents.
      • Improve profits.
      • Maintain compliance with regulatory bodies.
      • Manage and establish ownership of industry managed loss control programs.
      • Reduce Workers' Compensation rates.
